I have a funny connection with actor Brendan Fraser, who keeps popping up in my journalism career.

While writing for Cinefex, it was always a gag that if a film appeared starring Brendan Fraser, I'd be the one fighting to cover it at the chagrin of another member of our editorial staff who was not a fan, and who shall remain nameless, Estelle.

The truth is, I've always admired Mr. Fraser for the duality of his roles, as seen in his amazing star turn in Aronosfky's drama The Whale, versus his swashbuckling antics in The Mummy. And so, I was intrigued to see him recently in a Variety peer-to-peer conversation as part of the publicity for his new Searchlight Pictures drama, Rental Family.

In the Variety clip (linked below), Brendan bantered candidly with his Mummy co-star Dwayne Johnson, his pal since the 2001 Mummy sequel The Scorpion King (which I also happened to cover for Cinefex). Brendan's thoughtful commentary triggered a Facebook flashback to a story that I conducted with him back in 1999, and so I decided to transpose that here with an easier-to-read link to the article that I wrote back then.

Years ago, I had a fascinating conversation with Mr. Fraser for Cinefantastique when he was doing publicity for the very goofy Dudley Do-Right movie, but I really wanted to talk to him about his role in Bill Condon's Frankenstein drama Gods and Monsters. We swung back and forth and he lit up about his action/comedy roles and became much more soft-spoken about his dramatic pursuits. Lovely fellow.
