'Picard' Book Reveal

Thar she blows! Titan Books has, at last, revealed the cover for our next publication, Star Trek: Picard – The Art and Making of the Series.

Trekkers will recognize the cover art as featuring the prow of the Changeling warship The Shrike menacing the stranded Federation starship S.S. Eleos XII in the Ryton system nebula, as featured in Season Three of Jean-Luc Picard’s recent Star Trek adventures. As the title indicates, this publication – edit: now scheduled to appear Feb. 27, 2024 – features the making of all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard.

Or, to excerpt the publisher’s blurb:

‘The book explores each of the three separate season-long narratives, which tell the story of Picard in later years, as he is brought out of retirement on his family chateau to face old enemies such as the Borg, take command of a new starship, and ultimately reconcile with his past…. Alongside interviews with showrunners, writers, cast, and crew, discussing concepts and character arcs…. This beautifully illustrated hardback, featuring behind-the-scenes and on-set photography, and a range of production art, is an in-depth exploration of a hugely popular and seminal Star Trek character.’

This project began, for me, in June of 2022. Shortly after I signed on, the first teaser image for the book appeared online. That was just after the series finished shooting, and showrunners were completing postproduction. Back then, we had hoped to coincide publication with the Season Three finale, in Spring 2023. To make that possible, I was privileged to have access to the series’ grand finale, which was still a work in progress. We delivered, but publication kept shunting back, first into Summer, then Fall, and now to a 2024 release.

When the book appears, readers will be getting approximately 32,000 words of stories about the making of Picard, Seasons One through Three. This includes two dozen new interviews, which yielded 92,000 words of transcripts and more than 500 images with 150 captions.

Thanks to Jo, Sian, and the team at Titan for inviting me on this adventure, to Marian and JVC at CBS for making it all possible, and to Terry, Jonathan, Dave, JZ, Alex, Kristen, Akiva, Michael, and all the filmmakers for their generosity in sharing their stories.
